A lot of the music I’ve added to this website is royalty free, provided in a majority by Kevin Macleod and downloaded from this link:

Game Dev

Ren’py (https://www.renpy.org/):

A free game engine for making visual novels! It’s been used to make games like Slay the Princess, Bad End Theatre, Doki Doki Literature Club, and lots more! For anyone intimidated by coding, it’s really easy and intuitive to pick up with a few tutorials!

For tutorials, Youtube is your best friend! I highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/@vimi, as their tutorials are usually pretty clear and they often highlight useful tools and addons for Ren’Py!

Godot (https://godotengine.org/):

Yet again, free and open source! This is a lot more technically involved, so a deeper understanding of coding is needed. But I generally really love the way it handles working on 2D assets for games, and I actually had a lot of fun animating sprites using key frame positions in it at one point.

Illustration & Animation

Clip Studio Paint (https://www.clipstudio.net/en/dl/):

I do both illustration and animation in Clip Studio. I like that they have a perpetual licensing option for PC (I’m avidly against subscriptions). I actually started out with the Pro version, which (last I checked) is around $50, and I upgraded to EX when I got more into animation. EX is a bit on the pricy side, but worth it in my opinion because I really like CSP as a program- lots of tools and resources. Bit of a warning though, when they drop a new version you do pay (usually a discounted price) for major updates if you want access!

Blender (https://www.blender.org/):

I love love love blender with all my heart. While I do work primarily in 2D, making or finding access to 3D elements even just for reference is a blessing for my work. Also, the grease pencil tool is fire. Oh, and nodes too- stylization, my beloved.

Davinci Resolve (https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve):

“Woah, why is there a video editor in this section???” Surprise! I use Davinci for compiling my animation frames, as well as for post/compositing after exporting from CSP. It’s not quite as adept for this as After Effects, but considering it’s free access and the learning curve isn’t that bad comparatively (if you’ve used Adobe, you can use this), I really like using it!
